In the heart of Leichhardt, Sydney, Annesley House embodies the fusion of historical charm and modern living. Rooted in Australia’s Federation period (late 19th to early 20th century), it reflects the era’s British Edwardian and Queen Anne influences, adapted to the Australian climate.
Federation homes like this are celebrated for their ornate gables, decorative verandahs, red brick exteriors, and stained glass, symbolising a growing national identity and cherished heritage.
For Mike and Morlly Architects, the challenge was to respect the Annesley House’s historical significance while creating a space that meets the demands of contemporary living. The solution was not to contrast the old and new but to create a dialogue between them. The original Federation façade was meticulously preserved, maintaining its red brick charm and intricate detailing, which anchor the house in its historical context.
The contemporary extension at the rear of the Annesley House is where the architectural ingenuity of Mike and Morlly truly shines. This addition is not hidden or subdued but is instead a bold statement that complements rather than competes with the original structure. Clean lines, expansive glass, and a minimalist aesthetic characterise the new section, creating a light-filled, open-plan living space that contrasts beautifully with the more enclosed, traditional rooms of the original house.

The transition into the contemporary extension is marked by a shift in atmosphere. The interior of the new section is sleek and modern, with polished concrete floors, minimalist fittings, and a neutral color palette that enhances the sense of space and light

The use of materials in the extension is both thoughtful and innovative. While the old structure’s red brick is echoed subtly in the new design, it is complemented by modern materials like white brick, black metal and glass. The extension features large, floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and the outdoor garden and pool. This openness is a stark contrast to the more compartmentalised nature of the Federation rooms, yet the transition between the two feels natural and effortless.
Inside, the house continues to blend old and new elements in a way that feels cohesive and intentional. The original rooms retain their historical charm, with high ceilings, ornate cornices, and original fireplaces preserved and restored. These spaces serve as a reminder of the home’s heritage, offering a sense of nostalgia and warmth.
The Annesley House in Leichhardt is a prime example of how historical preservation and contemporary design can coexist in harmony. Mike and Morlly Architects have successfully navigated the complexities of working with a heritage building, preserving its historical integrity while introducing a modern extension that enhances and revitalises the space.
This project serves as an inspiration for future architectural endeavours, demonstrating that with creativity and respect for history, it is possible to create homes that are both timeless and forward-thinking. The Annesley House is not just a place to live; it is a living piece of history, thoughtfully adapted for the needs of the present and the future.
