In the vibrant inner-city suburb of Moore Park, where historic charm meets contemporary living, Mike and Morlly Architects have undertaken a remarkable alteration and addition project. This house exemplifies their expertise in blending the old with the new, preserving the character of the original structure while introducing modern elements that enhance functionality and aesthetics.
The Moore Park house gave Mike and Morlly Architects a unique opportunity to balance preservation with innovation. The original home, with its period features and classic facade, had a character that the clients wanted to retain, yet they also desired a modern space that suited a growing family and fostered a stronger connection to the outdoors.
Approaching the project with a philosophy of respecting the existing structure while embracing contemporary design, the architects aimed to seamlessly blend old and new. Through thoughtful planning, complementary materials, and attention to the architectural language, they ensured the additions felt like a natural evolution rather than a stark contrast.
The transformation involved substantial changes at the rear, with a new extension opening the living spaces to the garden. This modern addition features expansive glass, clean lines, and a minimalist look, creating a subtle but striking complement to the original structure. Indoors, the house was reconfigured for contemporary living, with an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area flowing into the extension. Natural light fills the space, enhanced by large sliding doors and strategically placed windows. The spacious kitchen, complete with modern appliances and a large central island, now serves as the home’s heart.

Sustainability was also a priority for the Moore Park house. The architects incorporated eco-friendly elements, such as passive solar design in the extension, with large windows positioned to capture winter sunlight while providing shade in summer.

A key challenge in designing the Moore Park house was blending the new extension with the original structure. To achieve this, the architects used a material palette that harmonises with the existing tones and textures, with timber and brick tying old and new elements together. A slight shift in floor levels marks the transition, adding visual interest and defining distinct areas within the home.
The upper floor was redesigned to include a new master suite and updated bedrooms. The master suite offers a serene retreat, complete with a walk-in wardrobe, luxurious ensuite, and a private balcony overlooking the garden. Period features like decorative cornices and high ceilings were preserved to maintain the home’s original character.
Sustainability was also a priority for the Moore Park house. The architects incorporated eco-friendly elements, such as passive solar design in the extension, with large windows positioned to capture winter sunlight while providing shade in summer. Sustainable materials, including recycled timber and low-VOC finishes, were used throughout. Enhanced insulation and double-glazed windows boost energy efficiency, reducing heating and cooling costs for a more comfortable, environmentally responsible home.

Innovative design solutions were employed to maximise space and functionality within the existing footprint of the Moore Park house. Custom cabinetry and built-in storage were integrated throughout, ensuring efficient use of every inch. The reconfigured layout also allows for better airflow and natural ventilation, reducing the need for artificial cooling.
Working on an alteration and addition in a heritage area like Moore Park posed unique challenges. Gaining approval for the changes required ensuring the new design would respect the historic character of the neighbourhood. Mike and Morlly Architects collaborated with heritage consultants and local authorities to develop a sympathetic design that honours the original structure and its surroundings.
Integrating modern amenities and technology within the existing building constraints was another challenge. The architects skilfully addressed this by incorporating contemporary features that enhance, rather than overshadow, the original design. This approach allowed them to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing home that meets the needs of a modern family while preserving its heritage.
The alteration and addition of the Moore Park house by Mike and Morlly Architects showcases the impact of thoughtful design in revitalising an existing structure. By blending contemporary elements with the charm of the original, the architects have created a home that is both timeless and modern, exemplifying how old and new can coexist harmoniously to produce a beautiful, functional living space.
