In the quiet, leafy suburb of North Epping, Mike and Morlly Architects have undertaken a stunning alteration and addition project that redefines the traditional family home. By seamlessly blending the existing structure with contemporary design elements, they have transformed a modest suburban house into a sophisticated residence that meets the demands of modern living.
The North Epping house exemplifies Mike and Morlly Architects’ commitment to creating homes that respect their context while incorporating innovative design. The original mid-20th-century house had a solid foundation but lacked the space and amenities the homeowners desired. The challenge was to preserve its character while expanding and modernising it for a contemporary family.
Their design philosophy focused on harmonious integration, aiming for a seamless connection between old and new, with the addition complementing the existing structure. This approach is evident in the choice of materials, the thoughtful layout, and the way new spaces interact with the landscape.
The project involved a major rear expansion, adding a modern extension that contrasts with yet respects the original structure. Characterised by clean lines, large windows, and a minimalist look, the addition brings a contemporary edge to the home.
Inside, the house has been transformed into a light-filled, open-plan space. The ground floor now features a spacious kitchen, dining, and living area flowing into the new extension. The design maximises space and creates continuity between the interior and garden, with large sliding glass doors opening onto a deck that blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor living.

The architects aimed to create a seamless connection between the old and the new, ensuring that the addition would not overshadow the existing structure but rather complement and enhance it.

The kitchen is a highlight of the new design, featuring sleek cabinetry, high-end appliances, and a large island that functions as both workspace and social hub. Natural materials like stone and timber add warmth and texture, creating an inviting space ideal for family gatherings and entertaining.
The upper level has been reconfigured to offer a more comfortable layout, including a new master suite with a walk-in wardrobe, ensuite, and large windows overlooking the garden, providing a tranquil retreat. Updated children’s bedrooms complete the transformation.
Sustainability was central to the North Epping house design. Mike and Morlly Architects incorporated eco-friendly features such as passive solar gain, sustainable materials like recycled timber and low-VOC finishes, and energy-efficient glazing, insulation, and rainwater harvesting, enhancing comfort and reducing environmental impact.
The integration of modern technology, from smart home systems controlling lighting and climate to energy-efficient appliances, further elevates convenience and sustainability, making the North Epping house both eco-friendly and future-ready.

Undertaking an alteration and addition project in North Epping presents unique challenges, especially in integrating new designs with the neighbourhood’s character. Mike and Morlly Architects approached this with care, ensuring the extension was respectful of surrounding homes while still making a bold architectural statement.
Another challenge was reconfiguring the original house to meet the clients’ needs. The architects skillfully addressed this by reimagining the layout and introducing elements that enhanced functionality without compromising the home’s integrity.
Privacy was also crucial due to nearby homes. The architects managed this by positioning windows carefully and using landscaping to create seclusion without sacrificing light or views.
The North Epping house by Mike and Morlly Architects showcases how thoughtful design can revitalize an existing home. Blending contemporary elements with the original structure, the architects created a timeless, modern residence that balances style, comfort, and sustainability, transforming a modest suburban home into a sophisticated family retreat.
